Engineering Scholarships You Can Apply To
An engineering degree takes a lot of time and is quite expensive as well. These days, most people who would dare take an engineering course would be those who are rich and those who are funded by a college scholarship. If you are one of the latter, then you will know that the competition for an engineering scholarship, whether funded by the government or by private organizations, is quite stiff. You should know where to look if you want to get a engineering degree without the financial burden.
Among the popular choices when it comes to college engineering scholarships and college grants is the University of Maine Microelectronics Scholarship Consortium. This program gives out scholarships based on merit and co-op work experience to promising first-year, sophomore, junior, and senior students interested in microelectronics/semiconductor industry and majoring in either engineering or science.
The deal is that students must attend the University of Maine and must show academic promise as well as potential to grow in the microelectronics/semiconductor industry. Freshman college students are awarded with a $1,500 academic scholarship and will be given each year if he or she maintains eligibility.
For those who are interested in structural and/or civil engineering, the Wire Reinforcement Institute (WRI) Education Foundation provides scholarships and college tuition grants. The fund, however, will not be awarded directly to the recipient but rather to the college or university where the recipient is attending.
You can also check other engineering scholarships from various engineering organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Institute of Industrial Engineers, and the National Society of Professional Engineers. Engineering may be an expensive dream, but with scholarships available for such courses, you might become an engineer some day and create a better future for the world.

How To Get A Finance Job From An Engineering Background
"It's something very personal, a very important thing. Hell! It's a family motto. Are you ready Jerry? I wanna make sure you're ready, brother. Here it is: Show me the money. SHOW! ME! THE! MONEY! Jerry, it is such a pleasure to say that! Say it with me one time, Jerry."
-Rod Tidwell, "Jerry Maguire" (1996)
"If I'm an engineering major, how can I get into finance? Show me the money!"
I find myself answering this question a lot, possibly because I'm from a non-finance background myself. Or maybe just because everyone wants to get into finance.
How you can leverage your technical background to land a job in the jungle of finance? As a technical person right out of school, you have two ways of breaking in:
Get an investment banking analyst position in the technology or TMT (Technology, Media & Telecom) group of a bank. You will use none of your quantitative/analytical background and instead use your interest in the industry/work ethic to get in.
Get a quantitative job at a hedge fund or doing trading/fixed income at a bank. You will leverage your quantitative and probability skills to get in.
Of the two, the second is easiest for most engineers. Wall Street has never been more quantitative, and it's only getting more quant-focused each day. Even with some recent problems in the credit market and some high-profile difficulties at prestigious funds such as Goldman Global Alpha, this trend will not stop anytime soon.
Hedge Fund And Related Jobs
On-campus recruiting for these positions is less common than it is for banking analysts, but it's there if you seek it out. Citadel, one of the largest hedge funds in the world, does undergraduate recruiting for its rotational program, as does Jump Trading, based out of Chicago.
The good news is that if you're an engineering major at a top university, you have a good chance of landing one of these jobs, even with no previous finance experience. If you're in this position and go through on-campus recruiting, you need to emphasize your interest in finance because this is how they select candidates. Here's a direct quote from a Citadel recruiter:
"To be honest, we know you're all pretty good quantitatively... after all you got an engineering degree at one of the top programs in the country. You need to show us that you're interested in finance because that's what differentiates you."
During interviews they will ask you quantitative questions but it's crucial that you show them you have had a strong and consistent interest in finance. Have some good stories prepared, especially on personal investing and why you're particularly well-suited to be a trader.
For trading jobs the "fit" part of the interview is even more important than it is for banking. If you don't trade stocks in between classes and wake up early each morning to read financial news, gambling is a good hobby to mention. I was asked if I played video poker/online poker and other casino games when interviewing for hedge fund jobs. You want to emphasize hobbies/interests that show you can think about risk vs. reward.
No Thanks, I Really Want To Be A Banker
Full disclosure: you can do this, but the hours are going to be far worse than trading, the pay won't be much better and you'll have to do truly menial, low-value-add work. The advantage is you do have a wider variety of exit options - doing engineering and then banking sets you up very well for venture capital, for example. And the perks are nice.
As a technical person, you have several things going for you right away: no one will question your intelligence, and they probably won't ask you brain teasers or math questions. If you can get a degree in Electrical Engineering, you can do Excel calculations in your sleep. And no one will question your attention to detail (or at least not as much as if you were an English major).
What you will need to focus on in recruiting and interviewing is demonstrating your 1) interest in finance and 2) ability to handle the hours/stress of the job, which are considerably worse than those of an engineering/tech company.
A few more specific tips: when you discuss your interest in finance you need to mention tech companies if you're applying to a tech group in a bank. And don't just mention Google or Facebook. These are the most visible tech companies by far, but anyone can learn about them by reading TechCrunch or by listening to friends.
You need to show real interest in the industry, which means taking the initiative and talking about less well-known companies. Before my interviews at tech groups in banks I made a list of less well-known startups/other companies I found interesting and had a story prepared around each of them. You should do the same.
As far as the second point about handling the stress/hours, as an engineering major you should have had many extended project classes... these are all good to mention, as are any internships where you launched a product that required "crunch time" at the end.

Online Education Degree - A Career in Electrical Engineering
Electrical Engineering online degree curriculum uses science, technology, and problem-solving skills that help in designing, constructing, and maintaining products, services, and information systems. Electrical Engineering is the oldest branch and it has an alliance with the Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering. Online degree programs help the students as well as working professions also.
How degree online is best for a technical students?
There are engineers who have earned a Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Engineering in areas that include electronics, electrical engineering, or computer engineering. A junior engineer may spend almost a year or two on the job learning of the company's products and electrical circuit designing procedures before choosing a technical specialty. Job responsibilities include designing, development, and implementation of products or systems. Research program helps in creating new ideas. It provides a number of challenges ranging from problem recognization, rectifications, and the selection of appropriate technical solutions, product materials, testing equipment, and procedures that helps in manufacturing a safe product that is economical and having high-performance products and providing excellent services. It is the best web based online degrees.
An electrical engineer needs to choose a couple of technical aspects of a position along with management responsibilities. The technical expertise that is required for management is increasing because of the technical boom in engineering, technology, and science.
A Bachelor of Engineering Degree with a specialty in electrical engineering does serve as a starting point for engineering professionals. The problem-solving skills required in an electrical engineering program are termed as an extraordinarily valuable asset. The same skills will equip you to pursue leadership roles in your professional circles outside the workplace.
In addition to the Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering, a Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering serves as an appropriate base for different allied fields. It includes Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, and Aeronautical Engineering.
Here are some typical job functions for Electrical Engineers:
The best way to assess career opportunities is to look at the production model of the company you want to work for. In a small company, students need to be proficient in several responsibilities and have restricted capital resources. The small number of employees needs to be balanced by the quality analysis of the rights and its impact on individual ideas, abilities, and skills.
In a large corporation, it is noticed that virtually all categories of positions are found, and there is a tremendous opportunity to specialize in a given area of interest. Big time organizations tend to offer numerous training programs with a greater stability, career growth, and more capital and equipment support. Many large companies tend to move more slowly than smaller companies.
It's a common scenario everywhere that employment opportunities and career paths are affected by changes in the economy and political shifts. The engineering profession, like other occupations is affected by the stock prices, defence policies, import-export as well as investment tax policies. The skill set required in engineering that is required elsewhere in the world may alter the demand for your own expertise - favorably or unfavorably. While planning your career, keep in mind that opportunities may change with the times. Out of so many degrees online, it is advisable to the students to choose the right educational program.

Using Keywords in Your Engineering Job Search
Without question there is far more competition now for every job posting. The recession has been exceptional hard on certain professions, especially civil engineering. The number of new jobs has been few compared to the number of individuals seeking employment. In this environment, you need an edge to set yourself apart. One of the best strategies is to use industry specific keywords or buzz words in both your Cover Letter and Resume.
After taking care of the basics, grammar and spelling, the next write or modify the Cover Letter and Resume specifically for the job posting. This is accomplished by embellishing the content with keywords and keyword phrases. Filling the documents with buzz words is just as important as action verbs. Keywords and Keyword phrases are normally nouns that are job-specific, profession-specific and/or industry-specific. The buzz words can be related to skills, technological terms and descriptions of technical expertise (including hardware and software in which you are proficient), job titles, certifications, names of products and services, and industry buzzwords and jargon. They may also include types of degrees and names of colleges and company names. Awards you have won and names of professional organizations to which you belong can even be used as keywords.
A list of keywords and keyword phrases can be created using several techniques. Some of the more common techniques are:
Boomerang Technique - Bounce the keywords and phrases used in the job posting back to the employer. Too many resumes are written for the general public and not specific to the job. This does not mean that you need to rewrite your resume every time, but that you should modify it by adding specific terms and phrases. Read the job posting closely, and you will find the verbs and nouns they are looking for. Most job postings are loaded with industry- and position-specific buzzwords. Take your cues straight from the source and include those same words in your resume.
Industry Specific Terms - The engineering profession has its own unique terms that few outside of the field would either know or understand. Even within the various fields of engineering there are specific terms. One such term is Building Information Modeling (BIM), which is a building design and documentation methodology that creates a reliable, coordinated and consistent digital representation of a building for design decision-making, construction document production, performance testing and actual construction process. Computer-Aided Design or CAD software, another industry keyword, is instrumental in maintaining the BIM model. Another term is Low Impact Development or LID also specific to engineering, but also specific to a few fields in engineering. The same is true for LEED certification, which is important in renewable and environmentally friendly or green design. To find more keywords, research industry trends and visit professional association websites to uncover current buzzwords -- especially those used by the hiring company or industry leaders.
Your Own - Again you can list your own Keywords that may or may not show-up in the company literature or industry sources. One such phrase maybe Project Management. Project Management means that you have the knowledge, skills, and experiences to manage all aspects of a project.
There are two main areas to use these keywords; written and oral.
Written - This includes the Cover Letter, Resume, Thank-You Letter, Career Profiles, and other job search communications. The keywords used here are specifically tailored to the job by letting the employer know that you are the "right" candidate for the job.
Oral - This is mainly done at the job interview, but also includes any other oral communications you may have with the prospective employer. The objective is to reinforce the employer's perspective that you are the right person for the job.
The key strategy that just might win you that next job is keyword and phrases throughout your Cover Letter and Resume. Review the keywords utilized by the job posting and the industry, and then repeat those keywords back to the reviewer.

How Man United Won The English Premiership Title
So Man United could not complete the Double by losing 0 - 1 to hated soccer rivals Chelsea in the FA Cup Final. But I guess hardly anyone in the United camp is complaining as they have won the Premiership title for the first time since 2003 - by dethroning two-time champions Chelsea.
"It was a difficult task given the amount of money Chelsea have," Sir Alex Ferguson said of his ninth Premiership title. "They were also the most resilient opponents we have ever come across." Indeed, humble words for someone who has now won 20 major trophies in his 20 years at Old Trafford.
Despite being 65 years old, it remains difficult to quench the insatiable winning mentality of the sporting and affable Fergie. In any case, for the sake of posterity, here's a blow-by-blow account of how the mighty Reds convincingly won the 2006 - 2007 season title:
1) August 2006
Soccer pundits predicted that after selling top goal poacher Ruud van Nistelrooy to Spanish rivals Real Madrid, Man United would blunt their attacking prowess. Defying the odds, by the end of August, the fortunes of the Reds read: 3 wins out of 3 played with 10 goals scored. Chelsea, on the other hand, fumbled to a 1 - 2 lost to mediocre Middlesbrough in only their second soccer match.
2) September 2006
Good times hardly last. Arsenal stole the thunder by defeating Man United 1 - 0 at Old Trafford and thereby ending United's perfect start to the season. This allowed Chelsea to regain top spot but cracks in their title defence surfaced when they could only draw with another mediocre team, Aston Villa. Meanwhile, eternal soccer rivals Liverpool succumbed to their third successive away defeat at Bolton. Things were shaping up for a two-horse race for the Premiership title. September ended with a superlative solo goal at Reading by the irrepressible Cristiano Ronaldo.
3) October 2006
Hitting a rich vein of form, main United striker Wayne Rooney struck a hit-trick to condemn bogey team Bolton to a crushing 4 - 0 defeat. This ensured that United kept pace with Chelsea while Liverpool's title hopes all but evaporated when they fell 0 - 2 at Old Trafford. Chelsea were dealt a massive blow when their first-choice goalie Petr Cech fractured his skull after a nasty tackle at Reading. As of this writing, he wears a reinforced rugby skull cap during soccer matches as medical specialists cannot guarantee that another blow to the skull will not result in irreparable brain damage.
4) November 2006
In the bitter cold, Man Untied outplayed Chelsea at Old Trafford but still had to settle for a 1 - 1 stalemate. beaming with delight, Chelsea's Jose Mourinho proclaimed that United blew a "big, big chance" to open up a six-point gap at the top. Big words, I would say. Careful - pride before fall.
5) December 2006
The full force of winter was felt as much as Chelsea's mounting list of walking wounded. Without the ultra-reliable Cech still out injured, Chelsea could only secure draws at minor clubs Reading and Fulham. The pathetic Arsenal, meanwhile, wrote their doom script by losing to a single goal at struggling Sheffield United.
6) January 2007
New year, same relentless march by United, as they retained their six-point advantage at the top. Things took an interesting turn when a day after Chelsea fell 0 - 2 to Liverpool, Man United foolishly conceded two late goals to lose 1 - 2 to Arsenal. Chelsea's injury problems complicated when it was rumored that Mourinho was denied funds to bring in a new centre-back during the January transfer window.
7) February 2007
Despite bagging the League Cup and boosted by captain John Terry's return from injury, Chelsea were unable to cut into Manu United's lead. A jaded United took on Fulham at Craven Cottage but were still able to bag full points, thanks to superb solo effort by Player of the Year Ronaldo. Undeniable resilience. Man United: Champions in the making?
8) March 2007
Man United's Irish utility man John O'Shea scored a priceless last minute winner against Liverpool. This win boosted their title aspirations by defeating a major soccer rival. With Man United facing injury problems of their own, Chelsea quietly kept up the pressure by winning.
9) April 2007
With two uncharacteristic blunders made by United goalie Edwin van der Sar, United conceded 1 - 2 to Portsmouth. On the same day, Chelsea beat a resurgent Tottenham 1 - 0 to put their title challenge back on track ... only to be derailed at end-April. Then, United scored four goals in the final half-hour to turn over a two-goal deficit at Everton, while Chelsea could only manage a home draw to Bolton.
10) May 2007
United needed four points form their last three games to be crowned champions. Ronaldo's dubious penalty at the Manchester derby cut the target to a solitary point. On 6 May 2007, Arsenal did United a massive favor by holding Chelsea to a 1 - 1 draw. This gave United an unassailable seven-point lead with two matches remaining.
And there you have it, Chelsea failing to live up to their favorite's tag billing after splashing out last summer to sign Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack. On the other hand, Man United captured the title despite making only one major signing in quiet workhorse Michael Carrick. Indeed, success need not necessarily go to the super-rich.
