The Junior Engineer/Junior Civil Engineer
DEFINITION
Under supervision, performs a variety of professional field and office engineering work
in connection with the Design, Development, Traffic and Construction Sections of the
Engineering Department and other related engineering projects; performs other duties
as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
The Junior Engineer/Junior Civil Engineer is the entry-level classification in the series.
Initially under close supervision, incumbents perform a variety of professional
engineering assignments. With experience and on-the-job training, the work becomes
progressively more diversified and difficult and requires increasing independence of
judgement. The Junior Engineer is distinguished from the Junior Civil Engineer in that
the latter has acquired Registration in the State of California as a Professional Engineer.
The Junior Engineer/Junior Civil Engineer classification is distinguished from Assistant
Engineer/Assistant Civil Engineer in that the Junior level classification works under
direct supervision, receives training, and is expected to gain the proficiency to
successfully advance to the Assistant level.
