Would you like to make the world a better place? Does the thought of living in a world straight from a sci-fi novel excite you? Could environmental problems, species extinction, disease, poverty and starvation become a thing of the past? It's possible that nanotechnology will change the world in amazing ways. But will those changes be good or bad?
Is it Ethical?
There's a heated debate concerning this new scientific advancement. Is it ethical for humans to have so much control over creation? Some say yes, and others say no. There are already major debates about cloning, genetic engineering and stem cell research. Adding nanotechnology is like putting more gas on the fire. But the issue is too important to ignore.
The Benefits
The potential benefits are astounding. Can you imagine scientists being able to take trash and turn it into something totally new and usable? Or what about being able to actually create food, instead of having to grow it? And don't forget about the ability to produce human body parts. Although this new branch of science hasn't advanced quite that far, it's not as farfetched as you might think.
Nanotechnology can potentially:
· Eliminate excess trash by turning it into something new.
· Eliminate certain diseases.
· Cause incredible medical breakthroughs.
· Clean up the environment.
· Eliminate the need for landfills.
· Remove toxins from the air.
When it comes to science, there's always the flip side of the coin. The benefits are equally matched by the cons of the situation.
The Cons
There's always a way to turn a good situation bad. And there's usually someone waiting to do just that. The same is true for nanotechnology. Although the benefits are huge, the cons are also cause for alarm.
Weapons are on top of the cons list. Imagine people being equipped with weapons straight out of a science fiction movie. There's also the possibility of creating self-replicating weapons. The ability to create powerful miniature weapons and to easily spy on people is a possible reality. A person with the right equipment and knowledge could gain great power.
There are dozens of things that could go wrong with this new technology. However, there are also dozens of things that could go right. Which side are you on? Do you think the benefits outweigh the possible ways in which the science can be abused? Time will tell if nanotechnology is a curse or a blessing.
