Many students, and sometimes others who are changing careers, find that a desired employer has an internship program. With a short term internship you have the advantage of learning if the particular career is the right one for you. Also, you will have an opportunity to sample the corporate culture to determine if you would fit in.
To get the most out of an internship and to advance your career here are seven key areas that you should pay attention to, to maximize your experience.
1. Always be professional and dress the part. This approach should start at the career fair to the first day at the office. In one sad story, the intern showed up at the office with her midriff exposed and wearing flip-flops. She was sent home on the first day and never recovered from her bad first impression. Be punctual; get the reputation of always being on time.
2. Organizations have a set number of interns they can hire. Show initiative by doing your best and by letting them know you want future employment with the company.
3. When you start ask your supervisor that you will always be interested in knowing how you are doing. During your time with the company schedule several meetings with your supervisor to evaluate your performance. Find out what you need to do to improve.
4. Keep an open mind. Your employer will not expect you to know everything, but they do expect you to be willing to learn. Spend some of your own time in self-study of particularly troublesome areas that you need more knowledge and understanding.
5. Build you communication skills. Spend some time learning something about everyone you meet. Go out of your way to make presentations. Study the organization's preferred methods of communications. If it's a one page executive summary or a detailed report learn what is expected. Ask questions and secure help from senior employees.
6. Keep your eyes open for opportunities to build your resume. Maybe, you will not be offered a permanent position, for a variety of reasons many having nothing to do with you, so do you best to source out opportunities to learn new skills. Spend some time with the HR people to learn what skills and experience would make you stand out with them and possibly with other employers.
7. Keep in touch with the people you worked with. Let your supervisor know what you are doing. These regular updates will keep your name in front of the employer. Also, you can ask them to provide you with referrals to other job opportunities if you are not offered a job.
An internship can be the springboard to a rewarding career. Or you can learn that your career planning should go in a different direction. In any event there will be considerable benefits that can be leveraged into the right career with the right employer. All it takes is some career planning, keeping you eye on the prize and you'll soon realize your career goals.
